Purpose of presentation: to inform, persuade

Organization of ideas:
coherence
- use a topic sentence with its supporting details

Format:
Large size and readable standard fonts.
Bright background, dark font or bright font, dark background.

Non-linear texts:
Graph, picture, diagram, flow chart, map

PRESENTATION AIDS
- related to the topic

- make use the aids in the presentation

- visual, audio or both

Type: Laptop, LCD, Powerpoint, note card, microphone, speaker, mahjong paper, whiteboard markers etc.,

Presentation slides: clear and visible; point forms; topic-related
Visual aids: e.g. pictures, videos, handouts, costumes, products, food etc.   visible
Audio aids: e.g. audio CDs, songs  loud and clear

Tips:

One topic on one slide of PPT/mahjong paper. So, use adequate slides of PPT/mahjong papers.

Prepare note cards of the size of your palm to help you if you “forget” something. Only include one topic with its relevant main ideas and supporting details on a note card.

How to deliver a good presentation?

[INTRODUCTION]

Greeting

Introduce yourself (and the group members)

State the title of the presentation

State the purpose of the presentation

Length of time (tell the audience how long you are going to take their)

Give an outline of your presentation (parts of the presentation)
(Who is/are going to present the sections/parts?)

Questions (tell the audience when they can ask questions: during or after the presentation)

Reference to the audience (personal touch from the speaker to the audience: e.g. I know that you are eager…; I know that you are very tired…;  I know that you are very busy… etc.)

[BODY OF THE PRESENTATION]

Present your topics/ideas/sections

Turn-taking

– 1st says thank you & invites the 2nd speaker
- 2nd says thank you, greets and continues the presentation

[ENDING THE PRESENTATION]

Signal to end the presentation

Summarize the main ideas (refer to the parts of the presentation)

Conclude the presentation (your final words)

Close the presentation by expressing your gratitude (thank the audience and end the presentation)

Invite questions

Thesis Statement: There are many types of pollution in Malaysia which are caused by many factors that lead to negative effects to the people and nature.

2.0 The types of pollution: There are two main types of pollution which are water pollution and air pollution.

2.1 Water pollution

2.1.1 Dirty and stinking water in the Klang River

2.2 Air pollution

2.2.1 Acid rain in Klang Valley.

3.0 The causes of pollution: Pollution is caused by humans and industry.

Thesis Statement

Generally, a thesis statement is what the whole idea of the essay/presentation. Therefore, it is the summary of main points. This may help the readers to know the general idea of the essay/presentation before reading the following paragraphs.

Topic Sentence

A topic sentence is a sentence that expresses the main idea of a paragraph. It tells the reader what to expect about the information that will follow.
